Black comedy shows up in many forms, from the pages of Shakespeare to Gothic comedies to hit shows like Six Feet Under and South Park. Some of the best dark comedies have been films like "The Full Monty" and classics like "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb." Dark comedy movie posters are fun to collect because they capture the warped reality of the films they represent.
There are many classic movies that take the subjects they cover seriously: "Requiem for a Dream" and its grim portrayal of the world of drug abuse; war films like "The Longest Day" that capture the horror of warfare; "The Sum of All Fears" that brings all our fears about terror and a nuclear accident and puts it on the silver screen. This kind of irony is strong in the work of comedy troupes like on Saturday Night Live, or in the absurd humor of British comedy groups like Monty Python. Only Monty Python could have seen the comedic potential of a dead parrot. What other movie genre could have given us the classic scene from "Life of Brian" where we are told to "always look on the bright side of life..." by men being crucified?
