Westerns? Sci-Fic? Crime? Horror? Look we have them all....
In the 1930's to 40's the original B-movie occupied the lower half (2nd film shown) of the double-billing (that's when theaters featured two shows on a Saturday, your mom dropped you off at the show with a lunch bag and picked you up after dark because you watched movies and cartoons all day!). They were low budget genre western cowboy film, gangster crime and classic horror movies. Many were popular after the attack on Pearl Harbor. TV was not popular yet. In fact, we were the first one to have a TV in 1945, so the B Movie Posters just drew us to the theater with their seductive, action packed images. The posters became most popular during the 1950's because of drive-in theaters across the country. If you blush easily or are squeamish, many of these B-movie posters are not for you. In fact, I would say that some of the graphics were considered in bad taste and really pushed the envelope. But times have changed and what was considered offensive in the 1950's (Ozzie and Harriet days), are now PG. Some are really funny with their drama and extremism. So you decide what your values are. Not only were the posters rated B movie posters, but the movie stars were put into the Hollywood studio system and the actors and actresses were categorized. When a B movie was to be made, then the actors were cast from this pool. Did you know that John Wayne, Audrey Hepburn and Jack Nicholson started out in B-movies? The Max Brothers Directors learned their craft in B-movies, and the B-movie industry provided work for foreign film directors from Europe during the period when they were still unknown in the U.S. When actors could no longer get a job in A-movies, then turned to B-movies to keep their careers afloat. That is how Vincent Price became so popular. Today there has been a resurgence of lower budget films due to the advancement of technology. It is now cheap to produce the lyrics and soundtrack of a movie. Filmakers are able to advance their less popular themes without the aid of large study support. And Europe and Asian counties are producing more B-movies. And you will see many Japanese B-movie posters because of the Kung Fu movies that have become so popular. |
