Who would have known that most adventure and action films came from
classic books? I didn't. But it's true! Many action and adventure films (and
eventually action / adventure movie posters) came from literary novels
filled with journeys, struggles, and nerve-wracking situations that the main
characters just happen to find themselves in.
With new special effects, films like the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel and Superman Returns, well, it does a person good to look back at roots of adventure and action movies. Long before Captain Sparrow made his scene, the world was ruled by Zorro, Robin Hood, and many other fictitious characters from the novels King Solomon's Mines, The Three Musketeers, and Scaramouche. In fact, these characters were so popular in the day that one actor Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. played many of these heroic roles. Of course many of these characters were depicted on action/adventure movie posters. Besides adapting plots from novels, there were other adventure/action movie classics from the movie database. Some excellent ones include The Black Pirate and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. (Their adventure/action movie posters aren't bad either!) During junior year in high school, my English teacher said that we must first define any words that we think we know. This would be a great time to take his advice because unknown to most, there is a difference between the words "action" and "adventure." According to the Oxford Dictionary, the word "action" means battle, fighting while "adventure" means dare, venture. So the movie Rocky (starring Sylvester Stallone) would be an action film while the Mask of Zorro (any of the numerous remakes!) would be an adventure film. Surprising?
